German American Day 2008

Highlights of German American Day 2007

Der Zerbrochene Krug (or “The Broken Jug”) is a play written by Heinrich von Kleist, the German poet, dramatist, novelist, and short story writer who lived during the turn of the 19th century.  As a comedy, it pokes fun at the failings of human nature and the judicial system in a forgiving way.
The play follows the story of Adam and Eve.  At the opening of the play, Adam is covered in various injuries and begins talking with his secretary Licht.  The broken jug is not mentioned until the sixth scene, but the audience is made aware that Adam is a highly suspicious character from the beginning.  The trial, during the second half of the play, shows the characters trying to piece together the events which led to the breaking of the jug.  At the end, Eve states that Adam broke the jug and chaos ensues.  Adam is able to make his escape during the confusion.
This is a play presented by students for students, so we encourage you to bring your school groups and to offer this experience to all your kids.  Performed by the Elmshorn High School Theater Group from Germany on the historic stage at the German Society on Friday, March 28, 2008.  We would like to schedule the play for early- to mid-afternoon, depending on what time the schools/students prefer.  We welcome your feedback as to the time best for your kids.
